The father of O'Grady is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents within Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at the North High School in Wheaton. Before making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. Her career started as model and actress for commercials with Montgomery Ward. She first appeared on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a prominent role as a recurring character in ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest as a guest on independent films and TV shows. Her first major role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the secretary with long hair of the squad from 1993 until 1996. Her nomination was for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama each year. She won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performances by an ensemble of actors in the drama series.
